4YE’s Summer TV Reels Feels Week One: What We’ve Been Watching During Summer Hiatus

Ahhh Summer. We have a love/hate relationship with summer when it comes to television watching. Summer means hiatus time for many tv shows, which gives us a lot of downtime and anxiety as we wait for our favorites to come back in the fall.

On the plus side, Summer does give us the opportunity to catch up on shows that we might have missed and find new shows to fall in love with, new characters to rally behind, and episodes we’ll want to hit repeat on.

That being said, we’re kicking off our summer edition of TV Reels Feels and here are our choices for week one of the Summer Hiatus!

Top Performer

Bec: So I finally broke down and started watching Once Upon A Time as one of my summer shows. Colin O’Donoghue as Killian Jones/Captain Hook is freaking amazing. It’s amazing how there’s an undercurrent of danger to his performance. I like the whole redemption arc for him. Definitely can see why people swoon over the guy now.

Clare: I have really wanted to not like Yvonne Strahovski’s Serena Joy in The Handmaid’s Tale, but damn it, she has just sucked me in over the past couple of episodes and the little rebellious acts she has instigated in “After” just made me want to root for her. Excellent performances by Strahovski.

Emmy: I just recently started Brooklyn Nine-Nine, and I just love Andre Braugher as Captain Ray Holt. He’s the perfect combination of serious and goofy when it comes to being a police captain, and in my opinion, so far, he’s also the king of one-liners and comebacks on the show.

Top Episode

Bec: The pilot episode of Pose is one of the best things that I’ve seen in years. Damn you, Ryan Murphy. I swore off of you after Glee. But you finally pulled me back in.

Clare: The Handmaid’s Tale’s “After” just continued with an outstanding second season of the show. I really loved having Samira Wiley back and getting a lot of Moira’s backstory and her life now. I have definitely missed her this season and this episode was a massive payoff for her being safely up in Canada. The aftermath of the Rachel and Leah Center bombing was brilliantly played and I am loving the little acts of rebellion that Serena Joy and June have going on, but how long will it last?

Emmy: I’m with Bec on this one because as she fully well knows, I have a love/hate relationship with Ryan Murphy’s shows. Every time I try to just quit him, he sucks me right back in, which is what happened when I tuned into the first episode of Pose. That pilot was EVERYTHING. From the music, the cast, the setting, I just gagged all over every scene and seriously want more. Damn you, Mr. Murphy.

Top Moment

Bec: The reveal that God was narrating Lucifer’s “Once Upon a Time” was an amazing reveal. And that he wanted his son to be happy. Ugh, my heart grew three sizes, and I can’t believe that FOX cancelled this series.

Clare: Samira Wiley’s Moira discovering that her partner Odette had been killed in Gilead. So raw and painful to watch.

Most Disappointing

Bec: Rather than cramming it into the end of the season, I really feel that Supergirl should have made Argo and Krypton’s return more of a centerpiece. The Reign plot should have been shortened instead. Really and truly, I’m exhausted of the Worldkiller and seeing Kara battle between both sides of herself the woman raised on Earth and the woman raised on Krypton would have been much more interesting character wise.

Emmy: Westworld missed the mark this week, and I think it was mainly because now they’re doing the most with Ford and Bernard.
