The fates of the characters of the Marvel Cinematic Universe may be in jeopardy following the events of Avengers: Infinity War, but Marvel Studios is still eyeing their next projects. While we can’t get any confirmations of the established MCU characters, the studio is focusing on some newer projects.
One of them is a film based on the Eternals.
These characters are genetically engineered humans created millions of years ago by the Celestials in a series of genetic experiments. It left the Eternals near-immortal with superpowers and feuding with their more monstrous cousins known as the Deviants. It naturally evolved into a Game of Thrones style epic powerplays while manipulating human history.
Between this and DC’s New Gods, I’m sensing a theme with Jack Kirby’s creations. The characters were created during the cosmic hero years of the 70s.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Marvel has found the writers worthy enough to tackle the challenge. Matthew and Ryan Firpo, who rose to prominence on the 2017 Black List, have been tapped to write the film. The cousins ended up on the list full of amazing but unproduced screenplays with Ruin, which tells the tale of an ex-Nazi captain who atones for his past crimes by killing the other members of his SS squad. It’s attracted enough buzz since making the list.
Currently, the Eternals movie doesn’t have a release date.
