James Gunn Translates Groot’s Gut-Punching Last Line In Avengers: Infinity War For Us (Spoilers)

Spoiler alert: Please stop reading if you haven’t seen Infinity War as the following post contains spoilers. Seriously please stop if you haven’t watched the film.

It’s been more than a week (now closing in on two weeks) since Avengers: Infinity War hit theaters. The film forever changed the Marvel Cinematic Universe, breaking fans’ hearts collectively all around the world with its ending.

While the film left us not only in shock but also left us with a lot of questions. Thankfully, Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn was able to provide an answer to one of the burning questions raised by the end of the film. It is safe to say though that the question that was answered definitely added another layer of sadness to Infinity War, because you know, the film wasn’t sad enough as is.

Spoilers ahead!

Gunn took to Twitter recently to answer a fan question in regards to Groot in the film. Infinity War had the largest body count to date in the MCU as the end result of the film’s events literally took away half the universe’s population, thanks to Thanon’s and the Infinity Gauntlet.

Everyone’s favorite living tree Groot was among casualties of the war.As he dies and turns to ash, Groot says his standard “I am Groot” to Rocket Raccoon. According to Gunn, that last “I am Groot” carries a lot of weight in its meaning, which is heartbreaking.

Gunn’s answer to the question was promptly followed by another fan’s response which, to be honest, is pretty a great summary of how all of us feel about that translation and reveal.

Given that Groot was pretty much a moody adolescent throughout Infinity War, the surprisingly childlike response from him is definitely causing more heartache.

If you’ll excuse us, we’ll be sorting out our new broken hearts in the corner and trying to figure out why there are tears coming out from ours.
