The cast for the live-action Mulan continues to grow with the production getting two big Chinese stars, Jet Li and Gong Li according to reports from The Hollywood Reporter.
Super action star Jet Li is in talks to play the role of the Emperor, who is the one who delivers the edict that one male from each household needs to join the army to fight the impending invasion of the Huns. It is this inciting incident that prompts the titular heroine Mulan to disguise herself as a man to go in her elderly father’s place.
As many know the animated story has Shan Yu as the leader of the Huns, however the live-action will take a slightly different turn and the antagonist will now be a villainous witch, this role will be played by Gong Li.
Gong Li, like Jet Li, is a huge star in China as well as making a fairly successful crossover to Western cinema. She has appeared in The Story of Qiu Ju and Curse of the Golden Flower and earned international acclaim in Chen Kaige’s Farewell My Concubine. She has also starred opposite Jeremy Irons in Chinese Box and appeared in Memoirs of a Geisha, Miami Vice and Hannibal Rising.
Chinese-Vietnamese star Xana Tang is set to play the role of Mulan’s sister, which is another deviation for the live-action story. The role of Mulan is being played by Liu Yifei, who appears in Once Upon a Time.
The film is being directed by Niki Caro, with a script by Lauren Hynek, Rick Jaffa, Elizabeth Martin and Amanda Silver.
Principle production is set to begin in China and New Zealand this August, with a release date of March 27 2020.
