Batgirl Movie Finds New Scribe In Bumblebee Writer Following Joss Whedon’s Exit

Batgirl is back on, everyone!

Okay. Technically, the project was never really off. When Joss Whedon left the project, however, it seemed pretty dead in the water for the time being. Apparently, and thankfully, the project seems to be a priority for DC Entertainment and Warner Brothers.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Christina Hodson (Bumblebee, Unforgettable) will pen the script for the project. Hodson beat out a pretty talent-filled pool of writers, including Roxane Gay who offered to write the script on Twitter.

Whedon left the project due to being unable to come up with a story. Hopefully, WB and DC did some pitch meetings this time around.

Hodson does seem to have a bit of pedigree with the character. She’s written for Batgirl before by helping to develop a feature project based on the Birds of Prey. So it’ll be exciting to see how she’ll translate (presumably) Barbara Gordon onto the screen. There are two other Batgirls: Cassandra Cain and Stephanie Brown. Gordon, however, is the best known in the role.

The last time the character of Batgirl appeared in live-action was in 1997’s infamously bad Batman & Robin played by Clueless actress, Alicia Silverstone. The character also made a cameo appearance in Ready Player One.

Batgirl currently doesn’t have a director or a release date.
