Whenever a biopic of any Hollywood star is announced, there is always the element of fear that the actor or actress portraying the star in question will not look right. However with the newest biopic that is currently filming this will not be the case.
BBC Film, Pathe Film, and Ingenious Media are producing the new project Judy about the Hollywood legend that was Judy Garland, and her life around the time of her final London concerts. Bridget Jones and Chicago star Renée Zellweger is playing the titular role, and it has to be said that the transformation is remarkable. When I first looked at the photo I couldn’t even see Zellweger and even after multiple looks, there is no doubt that the actress looks scarily like the Wizard of Oz star.
According to Deadline, the movie is set in 1968 London where Garland played a 5 week sold-out run of her concert series at The Talk of the Town which was created by converting part of London’s iconic Hippodrome Casino. In the movie, we will see her battle with her management, remember the good times with her celebrity friends and fans, charming her musicans, and she even hopes to find love; she meets her soon to be fifth husband Mickey Deans during this time.
In the movie, we will hear Zellweger sing some of Garland’s best-known songs including the iconic “Somewhere Over The Rainbow.” We know that Zellweger can sing thanks to her performance in Chicago, but whether Zellweger will manage to replicate that infamous Garland sound will remain to be seen.
Joining Zellweger in the movie will be American Crime Story‘s Finn Wittrock, West End stars Jessie Buckley, Rufus Sewell and Olivier Award winner John Dagleish who will star as singer Lonnie Donnegan. Harry Potter star Michael Gambon will also be joining the cast as will Game of Thrones actress Bella Ramsey.
Judy will be directed by the double Olivier Award nominated Rupert Goold (King Charles III)with a script from The Crown‘s Tom Edge.
It has been reported that filming has just started on the movie and there is currently no release date for the project.
