The upcoming Avengers: Infinity War hits the screens in just a few weeks. It’s not like that one is going to be a mystery – the plot has been building up over the last decade. We know Thanos has been after the Infinity Stones to fill up those little holes in the Infinity MacGuffin… er.. Gauntlet.
Only a couple of weeks ago, studio boss Kevin Feige revealed Thanos’s motivations. He believes if he exterminates half the sentient life in the universe, then he can save the universe from the unchecked expansion of that life. Thanos doesn’t want the universe to go the way of his now extinct home planet.
The Infinity Stones set in the Gauntlet will give Thanos the ability to bend space and time, control people’s minds and warp reality. The unstoppable Titan will wreak havoc across the universe. Some of our favourite heroes will be paying the ultimate price.
OK, so much for Infinity War.
But what about what has been known variously as ‘Avengers Part 4‘, ‘Infinity War Part 2‘ or ‘The Untitled Infinity War Sequel‘? It’s due out in May 2019, a year after Avengers: Infinity War, and so far no-one has dropped any hints about it.
Screenwriters, Stephen McFeely and Christopher Markus, spoke to comicbook.com on the set of Infinity War.
McFeely keeps up with the Avengers 4 gossip on social media. He is pleased to say that no-one is hitting the mark.
“I look all the time on the internet: people have no idea!” he says.
The writers didn’t want to just cut a film in half and make the fans “pay now and come back in a year for the rest” McFeely says. Although the untitled Avengers 4 will resolve some of the mysteries left by Infinity War, the writing partners wanted a film that would stand on its own as a distinctly different entity.
Co-director Joe Russo also added that they wanted to look at the film in a way more similar to the way the comics are approached. The writers will be picking up on different threads, or picking out things in mythology that appeal to them or that they want to approach differently.
The result will be that Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers 4 will be two very different movies. They’ll be linked, but almost as though they could be from two different genres.
My speculation is that they are all dead and the whole of Avengers 4 takes place in a Jacob’s Ladder, last-few-seconds, rapture-of-the-deep, oxygen-starved state of delirium. Or not.
Avengers: Infinity War opens on April 27th in US. Avengers 4 is (currently) scheduled for May 3rd, 2019.
