There is still a way to go before we finally see the full episodes of Doctor Who with Jodie Whitaker at the helm of the TARDIS, but we appear to have the first details of one of the bad guys Whitaker’s Doctor will battle, and it also gives us details of when in history the TARDIS will be travelling.

In a podcast with Homo Sapiens Scottish actor and Broadway legend Alan Cumming let slip that he will be finally appearing in Doctor Who as Stuart monarch King James VI of Scotland who went on to become King James I of England (and the first King of a United Kingdom). Expect ruffs and wigs and all things 17th Century.  Speaking of the role the Good Wife and  The High Life star said; “I’m about to go and do an episode of Doctor Who. I’m so excited! I’ve never been in it… [The character is] a nice baddie. I’m like a sort of dandy, foppy character who becomes alright in the end. They said he might come back.”

However it appears that Cumming let the news of his casting slip before he was meant to as this video on his Twitter explained:

The news that Cumming is joining the BBC series is very exciting, as for many years it was hoped that he would become the Doctor, and seeing him back on the BBC is always welcome.

In the meantime, Cummings new CBS series Instinct, based on the James Paterson novel of the same name, premieres this Sunday (March 18) on CBS at  8/7c.
