May is just around the corner. If you are an avid TV watcher, then you enter that month with a sense of dread as the annual TV bloodbath that is known as the cancellations and renewals list happens during the month of May. There are some shows that are a given for renewals while others are on the bubble and after often axed without giving them time to properly wrap their show.
Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.‘s happens to be one of those shows on the bubble, but rest assure, the powers that be on said show have stated that steps are being taken to see that it also doubles as a series finale, should the ABC drama not get renewed.
Co-showrunner Jed Whedon spoke out about the show’s future at the Episode 100 celebration, saying “We are in process [of writing the finale],” Co-showrunner Maurisa Tancharoen also shared that “We know what it is” and it could be “either” a season or series finale.
Fret not, fans, as Whedon elaborated, “Yeah, we’re ready for if this is the end. We’re definitely going to make it rewarding either way.” “We can certainly pivot and there are certain things that we’re putting in that at the last minute could be adjusted,” Whedon said. “But we know at the end we’re not moving off that mark. We’re going to do what we were planning to do, and I think that it’ll be thrilling either way.”
Since its move to Friday nights, S.H.I.E.L.D. has been averaging 2.3 million total viewers and a 0.6 demo rating in Live+Same Day numbers, placing last. On the flip side, the show does enjoy a 117 percent bump in the demo with Live+7 DVR playback, the fourth-biggest increase among all of broadcast TV.
The show’s 100th episode is one you won’t want to miss as both the showrunners teased it as one that will break all the rules. Tancharoen revealed, “It’s definitely an emotional game changer.” “I think that nothing will be the same after [Episode 100],” Whedon echoed, “so that I guess is the definition of a game changer.”
