We are only days out from Super Bowl Sunday, and let’s be honest, the majority of us are only going to watch it for the half-time show and the ads, because both are absolutely epic. While we can expect some pretty impressive spots from food, drink and car companies, what we will be keeping our eyes peeled for are some of the new movie trailers that will drop during the game. And if rumours are to be believed, the first look at a certain galactic hero has us very eager for Sunday to roll around.
Yes rumour has it that the first ad for the next standalone Star Wars film, Solo: A Star Wars Story will debut during the Super Bowl. And the trailer couldn’t come soon enough with the film set to open in a few months and we have yet to see little more than the various behind-the-scenes shots director Ron Howard has shared on social media.
Despite the challenges that have faced the production – including Howard coming in and taking over directing duties in June last year – and conjecture that the release would have to be pushed back, Lucasfilm and Disney have remained adamant that the film would still be released on its previously advertised date – May 25.
Solo is an origin story giving fans insight into our favourite smuggler’s life pre-A New Hope. It stars Alden Ehrenreich as Han Solo, with Donald Glover playing Lando Calrissian and Joonas Suotamo as Chewbacca. Also in the cast are Woody Harrelson, Emilia Clarke, Thandie Newton and Phoebe Waller-Bridge.
While Disney are keeping mum on the rumours, with a worldwide audience of over 110 million viewers and last December’s Star Wars: The Last Jedi coming to the end of its theatrical run, the time is ripe for the Solo marketing campaign to kick-off.
Other summer flicks expected to drop trailers over the course of the game include Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom (out June 22), Skyscraper (out July 13) and the latest Mission Impossible, Fallen (out July 27). We also wouldn’t be surprised to see spots for upcoming releases Black Panther (out February 16), Avengers: Infinity War (out May 4) or a Wrinkle in Time (out March 9).
Super Bowl LII featuring the New England Patriots and Philadelphia Eagles is Sunday February 4, with kick off set for 6.30pm ET.
