Nine fierce queens pretending to be nine equally fierce divas is not something one can prepare for but RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars 3 somehow pulled it off. This week’s episode gave us more than we could have possibly wanted in our queens as they were challenged to embody iconic divas in the VH1 Divas tribute to RuPaul.
There wasn’t a mini challenge this week but still plenty of workroom drama and fun to be had as the queens were assigned their respective divas, and some of the queens took issue with the one they were assigned to play. Aja was assigned to perform as Amy Winehouse, Bebe Zahara Benet as Diana Ross, BenDeLaCreme as Julie Andrews, Chi Chi DeVayne as Patti LaBelle, Kennedy Davenport as Janet Jackson, Milk as Celine Dion, Shangela as Mariah Carey, Trixie Mattel as Dolly Parton, and Thorgy Thor as Stevie Nicks. Not only did they have to do a show, the queens were also tasked with a redemption look, where they took their worst look from their previous season and tried to make it right. Aja did her princess look, Bebe picked her entrance look, BenDelaCreme chose her jewelry look, Chi Chi’s was the neon look, Shangela’s Christmas, Trixie’s worst dress ever, Milk’s Oh No She Betta Don’t, Kennedy’s Death Becomes Her, and Thorgy Thor’s neon again.
While most of the queens were excited, Thorgy Thor took issue with having to play Stevie Nicks. She spent most of the episode complaining to anyone that would listen about not being to ham it up as Stevie or make herself stand out.
Things didn’t get any better during their rehearsals with guest judge Todrick Hall. Todrick was in charge of the choreography and had his hand full with several queens. Shangela and Thorgy Thor, in particular, worked his nerves.
That being said, here’s how the competition played out:
Best Diva Performance: Bendelaceme as Julie Andrews singing “Call Me Mother” sounded insane to me when it was discussed in rehearsals but Dela pulled it off. Plus, you’ll never be able to get the mental image of Dame Julie rapping out of your head.
Runner-Up For Best Performance: Bebe Zahara Benet didn’t have to do much as Diana but that’s ok because she was Ms. Ross and slayed her part.
Worst Performance: Kennedy Davenport was a disaster from start to finish as Janet Jackson. Janet is high energy and precision and always in control. Kennedy was not. Then Kennedy sealed her place in the shady all of fame by basically blackmailing/guilting Shangela after the top two were revealed into keeping her in the competition.
Runner-Up For Worst Performance: Milk as Celine Dion. The fact that this queen thought she belonged in the top two and had a complete meltdown afterward is laughable. Trixie clocking her for her basic runaway look was everything.
Bottom Two: Kennedy Davenport and Thorgy Thor
Top Two: Bendelacreme and Shangela
Song for the Lip Sync: The Pointer Sisters “Jump”
Winner of the Lip Sync For Your Legacy: Shangela
Chante You Stay: Kennedy Davenport
Sashay Away: Thorgy Thor (but was then told by RuPaul that she’ll be back and was greeted by Alaska and Chad Michaels dressed as two Handmaids).
