Lena Hall Releases Series Of Obsessed EPs And Starts With A Wicked Little Town

Actress and singer Lena Hall won her Tony award in 2015 for her stunning performance as Yitzhak in the Broadway revival of the seminal rock musical Hedwig and the Angry Inch. She reprised the role in 2016 when she joined Darren Criss on the Californian leg when the show went on a US national tour, add to the fact that Hall also pulled the wig down from the shelf and played the role of Hedwig at some shows making Hall the first person to play both roles in the tour.

For Hedheads around the world, Lena Hall’s love for the show and the beautiful music written by Stephen Trask warms the coldest of hearts and listening to her sing these amazing songs is the perfect soundtrack to anything.

Last year Hall released a series of Stripped videos on her YouTube channel, where she sang some of her favourite songs in a semi-acoustic environment and week after week we all hoped we would get one of the songs from Hedwig.

Our prayers were answered last week when it was announced that Hall would be releasing a new EP every month in 2018 as part of a new series Obsessed.  Hall unsurprisingly started with Obsessed Hedwig and BOY was it worth the wait. Listening to and watching Hall sing these stunningly amazing songs only backed by Justin Craig and Matt Duncan (who were part of the Hedwig and the Angry Inch band Tits of Clay both on Broadway and on the national tour) is nothing short of a religious experience.

Hall’s voice is rich and smoky, and has the perfect rock tone to sing anthems such as “Tear Me Down” and “Sugar Daddy”, but is also able to reduce you to tears with the emotion singing “Origin of Love” and “Wicked Little Town.” I dread to think of how many times I have listened to the full EP on repeat since it was released and I have cried every time I listen to “Origin of Love.” My mind was well and truly blown when the realisation hit me that Hall’s voice is the only voice on the EP and that the backing vocals are also Hall. Is there anything this goddess can’t do?

The idea of the EP series is to allow Hall to showcase her favourite singers and bands throughout 2018 and if Obsessed Hedwig is anything to go by, fans of Hall are in for an epic 2018.  Entertainment Weekly shared the latest video in the series this week with “Wicked Little Town” being this week’s video premiere, and again I have already watched this multiple times but I have perfect permission to watch and listen to these songs on constant repeat:

Hall also announced on social media this week that the first Obsessed gig will be taking place at New York’s Rockwood Music Hall on January 29.

Thanks to Lena Hall and this Obsessed series of EPs I have the feeling I will have a much larger Spotify playlist in 2018 and I can’t wait to see what other songs Hall will cover.  Check out Obsessed Hedwig on iTunes, Amazon Music, and Spotify.
