Jessica Chastain’s Character’s Name And New Images Of X-Men: Dark Phoenix Have Been Released

Ever since it was announced last year that Jessica Chastain would join X-Men: Dark Phoenix as the villain, many people assumed she would play Lilandra, ”the empress of an alien empire called the Shi’ar, who leads the quest to imprison and execute Dark Phoenix, sending her into conflict with the X-Men”.

Though that apparently was not quite right. Her character’s name has been released, according to Comicbook.com and it is slightly different from Lilandra.

Jessica Chastain will play someone named “Smith,” who is a shapeshifter. Though given the fact that Smith is a shapeshifter, it is likely that her name is only an alias to hide her true identity and she could be Lilandra after all.

Another speculation is that Smith is part of the Skrull, a race of shapeshifters who control a vast cosmic empire.

There’s another theory, however, that Smith isn’t a shapeshifter at all and only appears to be one. Some think that Smith is actually a gender-swapped version of Mastermind, who is one of the original members of the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants in the comics. Mastermind uses his mind control and illusion powers to manipulate Jean Grey, which then led to the emergence of the Dark Phoenix and Jean’s loss of control. It would suggest that Smith uses her power of illusion to appear to be a shapeshifter to hide her true identity.

While Smith could also just be a “simple” shapeshifter, I quite like the idea of Mastermind, as it would give the movie a nice plot twist.

Besides the character’s name of Jessica Chastain’s role, 20th Century Fox have also released first images of the upcoming movie. One of them gives us a first look at Chastain’s character, who swapped her red hair for white (see above) and who looks quite different than the actress we have gotten to know over the years.

We are also getting a first view of our favorite characters who are returning to the franchise. Jennifer Lawrence has put on the blue paint again and looks just as good as Mystique as we remember.

Jean Grey will be played by Sophie Turner again, who first appeared as the younger version of Jean in X-Men: Apocalypse. The picture proves that all is not well for Jean, as she is shown sitting in what looks like an alleyway crying.

There’s also a behind-the-scenes image of Michael Fassbender, who plays the younger version of Erik Lensherr also known as Magneto.

The last image that was released shows – what looks like – a sad moment in the movie and I can imagine that it could be one at the end of the movie. It looks like it’s a funeral scene and given the rumors that Jennifer Lawrence wants to wash off the blue paint for good and the fact that Magneto (or someone who looks like him) is in the picture as well, it could be that it is Mystique’s funeral.

We have yet to see if it actually will be Mystique’s last appearance in the franchise and until then, we will speculate even more on who Smith the shapeshifter could be.

X-Men: Dark Phoenix will hit theaters on November 2, 2018.
