NBC has Heaven On Its Mind with this latest casting for Jesus Christmas Superstar Live. The 2018 musical has cast rock legend Alice Cooper as King Herod for the production.
Today, however, we learned that John Legend has joined the cast as Jesus Christ.
Heeeelllll yeah. Firstly, I’m just thrilled to see someone of color play Jesus. Secondly, I love John Legend (even though I love his wife more). So I’m thrilled to see what he will do with the role.
Legend has won an Oscar, Golden Globe, Tony, and 10 Grammys. He’s been stepping into more acting roles lately. He was in last year’s La La Land and played Frederick Douglass on WGN’s Underground.
Legend said about his role, “I’m thrilled to join the cast of this production of Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert! It’s such a powerful, meaningful musical and I’m humbled to be part of this performance. We’ve already formed an incredible team, and, as we finish casting, I’m certain we will put together some of the greatest talents around to do this work justice.”
The musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice follows the last week of Jesus’ life.
Legend and Cooper aren’t going to be the only well-known names in the show. According to NBC’s Chairman, Richard Greenblatt, they’re looking for recording artists to fill the roles to stay true to the rock opera roots of the show.
On Legend’s casting, he said that it “is also groundbreaking as the traditional image of Christ will be seen in a new way.”
Jesus Christ Superstar will air on NBC on April 1st (Easter Sunday).
