We haven’t been shy in our praise and love for the latest Marvel offering – Thor: Ragnarok – and it appears that the rest of the world is just as in love with the film.
In the month since opening the Taika Waititi directed action comedy has grossed just over $745 million. That’s one heck of a return on the film’s $180 million budget. With a huge financial success, as well as high critical acclaim, the movie has also seen it receive 92% on Rotten Tomatoes, the ultimate guide for what’s hot and what’s not.
What this means is that as it currently stands, Thor: Ragnarok is now the 10th highest grossing film for 2017.
When Waititi was announced as the film’s director there were many people who had firstly never heard of the New Zealander and those that had were aware that his forte lay heavily in comedy. His film What We Do In The Shadows, a well known ‘mockumentary’ in the Antipodes has gained cult status. Hunt For The Wilderpeople was his first mainstream film and was a huge hit in New Zealand and Australia, so down in this little corner of the globe we were all eagerly awaiting, and expecting big things.
And big things is what we got!
Thor: Ragnarok is the 17th consecutive Marvel production to open at number one at the box office, with the combined success of the film pushing Marvel to be the first franchise in history to earn over $5 billion at the box office domestically. Proof that their formula and planning has worked.
Not only has the film been popular, but merchandise from pop-vinyls, action figures, apparel and accessories has been eaten up by fans eager to display which character they favour in a cast of Heroes and Villains and a few that lie somewhere in between – yes Loki we’re looking at you!
