Bookhuggers who thought they had bid a fond farewell to Alex, Conner and the fairy folk of The Land of Stories until author Chris Colfer is able to bring the hit series to the big screen were given a wonderful Thanksgiving Eve present today with the announcement of even more books, including a new series.
That’s right, Colfer has signed a multi-faceted new book deal with Little, Brown Books for Young Readers, with Entertainment Weekly confirming that there are three more books in the TLOS universe in the works.
Having spent a whooping 48 weeks on the New York Times best-seller list, sold out book tours across North America (and one whistle-stop signing in London), and the recent announcement of the movie deal for which Colfer is both writing the screenplay and directing the first film, The Wishing Spell, fans just can’t get enough of the children’s series. To date, it’s spawned six novels, two picture books and three companion books. You better clear some more shelf space as now Colfer will be adding to the collection with the “ultimate insider’s guide to his beloved Land of Stories, as well as develop[ing] and scrib[ing] two novels in a brand new series”. While the new series is not a continuation of The Land of Stories story with a whole set of new characters that we will be introduced to, it is a companion piece and will feature fan-favourite characters (here’s hoping for the return of Mother Goose and Red at least!).
Given the TLOS was originally only slated to be one novel, before quickly expanding to three then six due to its overwhelming popularity, could we expect something similar from the new series? Only time will tell but I’m sure it will depend on the availability of Colfer to write another long series among the numerous other projects he has going on.
The insider’s guide to The Land of Stories is due for release next fall. The new book series is expected to launch sometime in 2019.
