To start with a card metaphor, Gambit has been dealt a pretty rough hand.
The solo starring vehicle for everyone’s favorite Cajun mutant thief has been in the works on and off for years. Directors have come and gone. It has been shuffled in and out of development hell. All we ever wanted to see Channing Tatum in the role.
Well it looks like luck has started to turn because Gambit is finally moving forward at Fox.
Fox announced Thursday that the project has landed a director in Gore Verbinski (Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl) and a release date. You can see the charmer on the big screen come Valentine’s Day 2019. The date was previously locked for an unknown Marvel/Fox project.
Oddly apropos, in my opinion.
Tatum has been the only cast member announced. He’ll still probably will be until early 2018 is my best bet.
In July, the actor did share an update on the project and how movies like Logan and Deadpool made the creatives pause.
“I think that we were coming to sort of the end of that phase of it at a really interesting time, where these movies went through a bit of a paradigm shift, where the X-Men movies and the superhero movies, with Logan and Deadpool — that really broke down a lot of doors for us. So we were trying to do some things that we actually weren’t allowed to do, and they just smashed down the doors, and now we’re kind of giving it a rethink.”
Well hopefully everything will be ship shape and ready to go for the highly anticipated film.
