I have to admit that I’m surprised that this project hasn’t happened sooner.
It was announced today that ABC has ordered a live action version of The Jetsons to pilot, according to Entertainment Weekly.
The Jetsons, for those who weren’t Boomerang kids or just cultural heathens growing up, followed an American family one hundred years in the future. It was the opposite of fellow Hanna-Barbera project, The Flintstones.
(In fact, they even teamed up together for a movie aptly titled The Jetsons Meet The Flintstones. It was one of my favorites growing up.)
By ordering it to pilot, ABC has committed to making this multi-cam sitcom in some form. It will most likely be picked up to series order next season. Otherwise, there will be penalties to pay.
No actors have been attached to the project. The pilot has been written by Gary Janetti (Will & Grace) and will be produced by Robert Zemeckis, who directed Back to the Future. It does seem to have a fairly impressive pedigree.
It definitely looks like the networks are looking to go back to the classics as the world slowly descends into a dumpster fire. NBC announced last week that they will be rebooting The Munsters.
