Supergirl season three’s filming is already underway. While we’re extremely interested to see what happens next for Kara and company, we won’t be seeing this familiar face return in her role.
Due to commitments in New York City, Laura Benanti who has played the dual role of Alura Zor-El and General Astra during season one on Supergirl will not be returning in the role of Alura. Benanti reprised her role in an early season two episode as Alura. Since then, however, Benanti has not reappeared on the show.
For good reason to, in addition to her stage career, Benanti has become a first time mom! (And their baby is super adorable.)
It looks like we will be seeing Kara’s mother again next season. She’ll just have a different face.
Entertainment Weekly has confirmed that Erica Durance, who played Lois Lane on Smallville, will take over the role of Alura Zor-El for the show.
Executive producer Andrew Kriesberg had this to say on the recasting.
“Unfortunately Laura, who Greg [Berlanti] and I have worked with for years going back to Eli Stone, was unable to continue in the role due to work commitments in New York. But we are so blessed that Erica has come aboard to offer her own interpretation of Kara’s mother. We had tremendous success with a former Lois Lane last season with Teri Hatcher. We know Erica will continue the proud tradition of legacy actors joining our shows and creating new and exciting takes on classic DC characters.”
Durance joins the “legacy” characters that have appeared on the show. Legacy in that they have previously played DC characters (like how John Wesley Shipp was originally The Flash in the 90’s). These include fellow Lois Lane Teri Hatcher, Helen Slater (Supergirl), Dean Cain (Superman), Lynda Carter (Wonder Woman), and fellow Smallville alum Laura Vandervoort (also Supergirl).
Supergirl returns on October 9th at 8/7c on the CW.
