SDCC 2017: Netflix The Defenders Take Over Hall H

On Friday, Marvel Television made their San Diego Comic Con Hall H debut with Netflix’s The Defenders! The panel was, of course, moderated by the one and only Jeph Loeb. During his introduction to the panel, Loeb was the surprise recipient of SDCC’s Ink Pot award for excellence in the comics industry.

As Loeb promised, the panel was full of surprises. The first was the appearance of Jon Bernthal, aka Frank Castle, aka The Punisher. Bernthal showed up to talk briefly about what being Frank Castle means to him. He also showed up to debut the first-ever preview footage of his own series, The Punisher! Yes, that’s right – fans in Hall H were treated to a sneak peek of the series, including a crazy scene of Frank sniping a drug lord in Juarez, Mexico … from a perch in El Paso, Texas! Yes, it IS as cool as it sounds. Unfortunately, we’ll have to wait until later this year to see the series hit Netflix.

And speaking of surprises, the audience was treated to a rather big one. In true Marvel Netflix style, the first episode of The Defenders was played in full exclusively for the Hall H audience. In addition to catching up with our band of heroes – Charlie Cox’s Daredevil, Krysten Ritter’s Jessica Jones, Mike Coulter’s Luke Cage, and Finn Jones’ Iron Fist – we were officially introduced to Sigourney Weaver’s villain, Alexandra. While we still don’t know much about the character, the first episode did clue us into some things – namely that Alexandra is dying. She has a mysterious illness that is rapidly killing her internal organs, and despite her apparently considerable wealth and social pull, there is no treatment or cure within her grasp. Alexandra also has a special sort of relationship with the newly not-dead Elektra. As Elodie Yung, who plays Elektra, explained at the panel, Elektra wakes up with no memory of her past. Alexandra is going to exploit this to turn Elektra into her own personal living weapon. What will Alexandra be using Elektra for? Well, that remains to be seen.

The panel also introduced us to the first full-length Defenders trailer! And luckily for everyone who wasn’t in attendance, the video was put online only shortly thereafter.

The Defenders will debut in full on Netflix on August 17, 2017!
