Loki Set To Take Over As Sorcerer Supreme In New Doctor Strange Comic

There’s someone playing tricks over at Marvel Comics, and it’s no surprise to find it’s the God of Mischief himself, Loki! He’s up to no good of course, but has he gone too far? Folks, this time he has taken over the role of Sorcerer Supreme from Dr Strange!

In an announcement by Marvel, a new Doctor Strange story is headed our way thanks to the signing of writer Donny Cates. Cates is well known for his God Country and Redneck series for Image Comics, as well as the Dark Horse Comics books The Paybacks, Ghost Fleet, and Buzzkill. Cates will be working on the new series with artist Gabriel Henandez Walta, who has some beautiful work in the New Mutants, X-Men and Vision series.

Of his new appointment, Cates said in a statement, “I’ve wanted to write for Marvel since I was a little kid, so the opportunity to come into this incredible world and play with all of these amazing characters is a dream come true for me.” He added, “Everyone at Marvel has been great to work with, and we’ve put our collective heads together to make some really special stories for the fans. I’ve never been more excited to tell the stories that I’m telling today. I feel like a kid again. Albeit a kid who is inflicting… just terrible things upon all your favorite characters.”

So what have they got up their sleeve? Well in what could well tie in to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Loki has taken the mantle of Sorcerer Supreme from our good Doctor! Just how he manages that is still a mystery (of course, who wants to know everything?!).

Cates teased, “There’s a new sheriff in town… and he’s not really the trustworthy type.” He also said, “What does  that mean for Stephen? And what lengths will Strange go to see his title and his home returned to him? I’ll say this…. you can guess all you like, but there is absolutely no way anyone will see the answers to these questions coming. As a dedicated Marvel fan myself, I can confidently say the events of this arc are some of the most shocking things in Marvel comics to date. I’m so excited to see what everyone thinks!”

Cates will be appearing this week at San Diego Comic Con, as per his tweet below, so maybe we’ll learn more there.

As for Henandez Walta, he summed up his feelings beautifully

The new issue of Doctor Strange will be in comic book stores in November, meanwhile have a sneak peek in the gallery below.
