If you were hoping for a new trailer for Star Wars’ The Last Jedi, you didn’t quite get it. But at the D23 Expo we did get a fantastic behind the scenes piece that showed a little more of the filming process and gave us a glimpse at what’s to come in Episode VIII.
On stage was writer and director Rian Johnson and some of the new and returning cast members including John Boyega, Gwendoline Christie, Daisy Ridley, Kelly Marie Tran, Laura Dern, and Benicio Del Toro. Johnson said he felt bad that all we saw of Boyega’s Finn in the trailer was him asleep, but Boyega said he gets into a fight with a pretty formidable opponent and then stepped up to Christie. Finn vs. Captain Phasma: Round 2?
In the behind the scenes footage we see Ridley doing her sword fighting training and even taking on three people at once. Could this hint at Rey getting into a lightsaber battle with multiple enemies?
New Disney Legend Mark Hamill was the last out on stage and he instantly received a standing ovation. He said the script for The Last Jedi was so unexpected and he loved that because he wants the franchise to keep surprising fans. Or to put it another way…
“It’s about family, and that’s what’s so powerful about it,” says Carrie Fisher in the behind the scene footage.
Acknowledging how emotional it will be for fans to watch Fisher in the new film, Disney’s Alan Horn said as much as we love her already, we’re going to appreciate her even more. I’ll try to keep that in mind when I’m fighting off tears every time General Leia Organa is on the screen.
The Last Jedi hits theaters on December 15.
