There was never any question about whether Marvel would bring its “A” game to the D23 Expo. But they did more than that. They brought approximately half the cast of Avengers: Infinity War.
And they also brought a truly outstanding, mind blowing trailer that was crammed with so much content it was hard to take in what you were seeing before it was on to the next incredible thing.
Here’s what we saw. The trailer opened with the Guardians of the Galaxy cruising through space and Thor landing on their windshield. Despite Rocket’s protest, they take the God of Thunder on board and he directs them towards a planet. But when they arrive he says, “Something is very wrong.”
Is this planet Earth? It’s not clear. Throughout the trailer we hop around to seemingly different locales and some of them definitely don’t look like Earth. Thanos is on a rampage and he’s gigantic. He doesn’t have a complete infinity gauntlet but he’s doing enough damage as is. Scarlet Witch is seen trying to help Vision, Peter Parker’s spidey senses are tingling, and Loki is holding up the Tesserect, aka the Cosmic Cube to someone, maybe even Thanos.
“He’s coming for us,” says Tony Stark. And everyone leaps into action. Star Lord and Dr. Strange are teamed up, with the sorcerer conjuring steps as Quill runs in the air. Bucky and Black Panther run forward together with a Wakandan army behind them. Thanos grabs Thor and tries to crush his head. Captain America is sporting a fabulous beard and longer hair. Spider-Man has his Avengers suit on.
“You can fight it … you can run from it,” Thanos said. “But destiny still arrives.”
Filming on Infinity War is only halfway complete but from this trailer, it looks like a tour de force for Marvel. Part 1 arrives in theaters May 4, 2018.
