There have been fan theories around Jon Snow and his parents ever since Game of Thrones started. One of them was confirmed at the end of last season when it was revealed that Jon wasn’t the son of Ned Stark, but the son of his sister Lyanna.
The fan theory also suggested that Rhaegar Targaryen was Jon’s biological father, which might get revealed on the show anytime now, especially since Bran Stark now knows who Jon’s birth mother is. Off-screen it was already confirmed, when HBO released a family tree for Game of Thrones, which showed who Jon’s parents are. Rhaegar was the brother of Daenerys and Viserys, which would make Jon their nephew and also an heir to the Iron Throne.
Around this revelation, however, revolves another fan theory that arose following the airing of a scene in season 6’s season finale. Remember when Lyanna whispered something in Ned’s ear, which we obviously can’t hear? Fans really wanted to know what she said to her brother and used lip reading to find out what she had said and it seems to be a name.
In a Reddit post, the author claims to have a leaked picture of an excerpt from the upcoming issue of Empire, which confirms Jon’s heritage even more. The image shows an excerpt of an interview with Isaac Hempstead Wright, who plays Bran Stark on the show.
“As we saw in the last episode of season 6, Bran’s psychic time-travelling ‘green sight’ revealed the true nature of Jon’s birth heritage and his real name: Jaehaerys Targaryen”.
Now that is something that has fans really excited, as it shows that their theory has been right all along.
This new information isn’t just exciting for fans, but it is also important to Bran, as Wright further discusses in the interview. “Bran’s now in this precarious situation in which it’s just him and Meera [Ellie Kendrick], and he has all of this information that could change the entire story.” Although, it is not just about Jon but about the White Walkers too. “He knows about the origin of the White Walkers, too.”
The latter could have a major impact on the show too, as it could be a way to stop the White Walkers. However, just the revelation of Jon’s heritage will bring major changes to the characters once everyone knows about it. After all, Jon could really be “the prince that was promised.”
I am sure we will find out more about Jon and his heritage and how Bran will deal with the information he has now when Game of Thrones returns July 16 on HBO.
