Sonequa Martin-Green Shares Details About Her Star Trek: Discovery Character

Star Trek: Discovery has gotten some a-maz-ing buzz ever since the trailer was dropped during Upfronts in May.

Why shouldn’t it? It looks gorgeous. It looks well acted. The cast is going to be great.

Already, fans have been having arguments about it from the trailer. Specifically, they have been arguing about the ancestry of the series main character First Officer Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green). Given her seemingly close relationship to Sarek (James Frain), people thought that she could have been half-Vulcan.

Well according to Martin-Green in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Burnham is not half-Vulcan. She is all human, but she does have connections to the planet Vulcan.

She is the first human to attend Vulcan Learning Center and the Vulcan Science Academy. So she and Sarek are probably childhood friends or something similar. Aw.

Martin-Green talked a bit about her character’s journey in the series.

“I’m the first officer on the U.S.S. Shenzhou that is captained by Captain Philippa Georgiou, who is played by the amazing Michelle Yeoh. I have an inner war and it’s a journey of self discovery and finding out what it means to be alive, to be human, to be a Starfleet officer, what it means to be a hero.”

It will be interested to see how a human who was essentially raised by Vulcans try to figure out her own truth about her humanity.

Martin-Green considers it an inner battle that we experience daily: our inner selves versus who we present ourselves as.

“I have the Vulcan conflict in my life from Sarek and Amanda so there’s always going to be that inner conflict with me. But I think it’s relatable because we all have some kind of inner conflict going on — who we are versus who we present ourselves to be. There’s a lot to be discovered.”

Star Trek: Discovery will premiere on CBS on Sunday, Sept. 24th. Then you’ll have to get a friend with a CBS All Access account or buy it yourself to watch.
