If you thought we were excited about the latest installment of Ryan Murphy’s American Crime Story – The Assassination of Gianni Versace – before (I mean we have all seen that Darren Criss naked selfie right?!), that is nothing on how excited we are now following the release of the first official set photos.
Entertainment Weekly recently joined the cast while they were down filming at Gianni Versace’s former mansion in Miami Beach, and yesterday (June 21), they released a sneak peek of what we can expect from the series and series stars Edgar Ramirez, Penelope Cruz, Ricky Martin, and Darren Criss. Based on these luxurious images, the casting, costume, hair and make up crew for the series are on point once again as the actors appear to perfectly capture the essence of their real-life counterparts.
The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story is based on Maureen Orth’s book Vulgar Favors, and follows the designer (Ramirez) and his killer, Andrew Cunanan (Criss), who embarked on a killing spree across the US. Versace was his fifth and final victim.
The series will reportedly cut between the July 1997 murder on the steps of Versace’s mansion and the subsequent suicide of Cunanan a week later on a Miami houseboat and key points in both men’s lives. Cruz plays Versace’s sister Donatella, while Martin is his longtime partner Antonio D’Amico.
In a behind the scenes video (see below) filmed while doing the photo shoot, Cruz describes the project as “what happened before his death. What happened after. It’s a fascinating story.” Ramirez expands on this, explaining just why it’s a sure fire hit for 2018: “This story has everything. It has sex, it has politics, history. It has violence, sensuality, beauty, design, fashion… it’s perfect.”
It definitely looks like the series will capture this and be as big, bold, and colourful as the man himself. With all these teasers, it is lucky that Versace will now be the second season of the anthology, with the Hurricane Katrina season pushed back to late 2018. But even still, early 2018 is a long time to wait.
Also joining the cast is another Ryan Murphy alum, Finn Wittrock. Wittrock has starred in three seasons of Murphy’s horror anthology, American Horror Story and also featured in his award-winning adaptation of The Normal Heart. Wittrock will star as Jeff Trail, a friend of Cunanan’s who also, unfortunately, ends up as his first victim.
The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story will premiere on FX in early 2018. The special Versace edition of EW is on sale this Friday, June 23.
