For A New Hope, it was Luke Skywalker; the wide-eyed farm boy from the Outer Rim with big dreams of fighting on the side of good who got thrust into the middle of a galactic war and somehow comes out on top and is a hero for the Rebellion. Flash forward almost four decades (in our time at least) and The Force Awakens has Finn; a wide-eyed former Stormtrooper who, seeing what the First Order is doing, defects and joins the Resistance, finds himself a part of the Resistance’s inner circle fighting alongside some of their biggest heroes. While he doesn’t exactly come out on top, saving the day at the end of the film, he has won respect from the Resistance’s top brass and infamy among their forces. Talk about a self-fulfilling prophecy when he tells Han Solo on meeting him that he’s “a big deal in the Resistance. Which puts a real target on my back…”
With only months left till the release of the second installment in this latest trilogy, The Last Jedi, fans are eager for any news about our favourite characters and their journey in the film. Luckily for those fans of Finn, John Boyega sat down with Entertainment Weekly last month at the Star Wars Celebration in Florida and shared some tidbits about what we can look forward to for the Resistance’s latest “big deal”.
“The funny thing is, between VII and VIII, Finn’s now a big deal! He is now a big deal. Imagine that – you get taken down by Kylo Ren [at the end of The Force Awakens]. Think about what the gossip’s going to be like in the Resistance. ‘Oh, that’s the guy that got slashed down by Kylo?’,” Boyega says before breaking into a grinning stride, winking and waving at imaginary Resistance fighters. “‘How you doing, guys? How you doing?’” he says. “‘Yeah, I was there. Then the Falcon picked me up… Oh yeah, I knew Han Solo by the way. We were pretty close.’ All that kind of stuff. They have a fan moment when they see him.”
While all the love and adulation might be fun for a bit, from the little we see of Finn from the teaser trailer, i.e. unconscious in a medical pod, the recovery from his battle with Kylo Ren is likely to have a lasting effect on the character. “Finn’s in a bad way at the end of VII. He has a lot of issues. He got slashed with a saber, and that took him down real hard, so he’s in a coma,” the actor reveals. “That suit, that whole thing helps him to recover. But we’re not sure whether that means he’ll wake up.”
Hmmm, I think we can safely assume he’ll wake up, but maybe he’ll not be 100% the Finn we know and love. “There’s some additional few things that need to be done to make him mobile. He’s definitely in a place where he needs some help,” Boyega says. After all, Finn is recovering from a lightsaber wound. A lightsaber wound! How many characters have we seen survive a lightsaber hit? Not many and even then, they’ve been Jedi. As Boyega explains, “Once it’s in, it continues to burn the skin and the cells. It’s not a piece of flame that whacks your body. It’s not something that works like a stab wound. It’s really brutal”.
Sounds like a long, uncomfortable road to recovery.
However, those fearing Finn will be sidelined recuperating, calm yourselves. Finn gets tasked with a new quest that he must accomplish. With his The Force Awakens partner, Daisy Ridley’s Rey off training with Jedi Master Luke Skywalker, Finn is paired up with the Resistance mechanic Rose Tico, played by newcomer Kelly Marie Tran and they embark on a “massive adventure”.“It’s a big mission they need to complete,” Boyega says. “The Resistance is under immense pressure, and it’s time for them to get a bit of help. That’s where Finn and Rose come in, and they’re thrust into a crazy adventure.”
Hopefully he can keep himself out of medical pods this time around.
Star Wars: The Last Jedi is in cinemas from December 15.
