The Master’s Return – John Simm To Reprise His Role In Doctor Who

The BBC have taken us all by surprise this week with the announcement that John Simm is to return to the role of The Master in the upcoming season of Doctor Who.

Simm last played the iconic role in the episode “The End Of Time,” opposite David Tennant’s incarnation of the Doctor in 2010. The news of Simm’s return to the role was broken in the latest edition of the Radio Times. “I can confirm that it’s true, thanks to the power of time travel I’m back,” Simm said. “It’s always a pleasure to work with this great team of people and I can’t wait for you all to see what The Master gets up to in the next series.”

Obviously, time travel allows for all sorts of shenanigans in the Doctor Who universe. We have seen multiple incarnations of The Doctor work together in several adventures over the years.

Showrunner Steven Moffat has promised that this time we are to see Simm’s Master go toe-to-toe with his next incarnation, Missy (Michelle Gomez). He commented: “Nothing stays secret for long on Doctor Who but you’ll have to wait a little bit longer to see exactly what The Master is up to and how he makes his return to face the Doctor.

“It’s been a huge pleasure to have fan favourites John Simm and Michelle Gomez face to face in the same role! It’s not often you get to see a solo personality clash.”

Michelle took over as Missy after an offscreen regeneration in 2014, up against Peter Capaldi in his first full episode in the role of The Doctor, “Deep Breath”.

Moffat isn’t giving anything away about how the two incarnations will get on. However, given that Missy is something of a control-freak and The Master’s previous incarnation is more than a little unbalanced, the two consummate baddies seem pretty sure to clash.

This season will see both Moffat and Capaldi ending their run on the show. We already know that the new head of series will be Chris Chibnall, who created the detective series Broadchurch. The new Doctor, on the other hand, is still unknown.

The new season of Doctor Who also stars Matt Lucas as Nardole and Pearl Mackie as new companion, Bill.

The new season starts on April 15th in both the US and UK.
