New Trailer for the Doctor Who Christmas Special: The Return of Doctor Mysterio

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas… because a new trailer for the Doctor Who Christmas Special is here!

The Return of Doctor Mysterio shows Peter Capaldi’s Twelfth Doctor teaming up with an investigative journalist (Charity Wakefield). Joining them are a mysterious superhero and, a bit inexplicably, Nardole (Matt Lucas) from last year’s The Husbands of River Song. Justin Chatwin also has a guest role as Grant. Check out the trailer below:

Fun trivia for those who may not know, “Doctor Mysterio” was the name Doctor Who often went by in foreign countries. Capaldi, as a lifelong fan of the show, has mentioned “Doctor Mysterio” more than once, particularly while doing events and press in Mexico earlier this year.

But let’s get back to the trailer. Is it everything we want? Mostly. Personally, I do wish new companion Bill (Pearl Mackie) was in it. It feels like a long time since she was announced as the new companion and yet we’ll have to wait until next Spring to see her in a full episode. Although (spoilers!), if the set photos are to be believed, we may see Mackie in the Christmas Special after all.

The fact is, it’s just been a long 2016 without a new season of Doctor Who on our screens. The BBC has certainly made do in the interim. The spin-off show Class premiered in October.

Six episodes of the animated series Doctor Who: The Power of the Daleks has also aired on BBC America last month. Known as one of the “lost” Doctor Who stories, the original six-part adventure starred Patrick Troughton’s Second Doctor and aired back in 1966, ,but the negatives were destroyed.

The animated story, which was previously shown in black and white, will air in color during the Doctor Who Takeover Marathon that leads up to the Christmas Special premiere. The Return of Doctor Mysterio, written by Steven Moffat, airs Sunday, December 25 at 9/8c on BBC America.
