When Agents of SHIELD returned for its fourth season, it brought with it the Spirit of Vengeance aka Ghost Rider, which upped the ante for the veteran hit drama. Critics and fans alike loved the addition of Robbie Reyes to the show, and the Ghost Rider arc blew everyone’s minds with its special effects.
Unfortunately for Ghost Rider fans, during the show’s midseason finale, Ghost Rider disappeared alongside his uncle to an unknown location, signally the end of the arc. The big question remains: Is this the last we’ll see of Ghost Rider on the show?
The answer to that particular is a sad yes and executive producer Jeffrey Bell took the time this week to explain why. “[Ghost Rider is] a lot for 22 [episodes], especially with everything else that we like and care about on the show,” said Bell. “It would feel like one flavor over a long period of time, but we’ve certainly left it open” to revisit.
There were also budget concerns as well as the CGI needed to pull off Robbie’s transformation into the Rider was rather costly according to Bell and other producers. Luckily though, the show is moving onto a storyline that will have them bring to life a concept that has been teased in the past with the LMD or Life Model Decoy saga.
“This year we’re getting to play with a lot of the toys that we’ve been hoping to play with,” executive producer Jed Whedon shared . “[LMDs are] something that we’ve been wanting to get to, and now we’re finally able to get to.” Whedon also explained why the show has shifted gears for the second part of season four.
“We want everything to feel like its own mini world, and to have its own flavor,” Whedon said. “So we do think you’ll come into the next section [of episodes] and immediately feel like, ‘Oh, this is a different kind of story.’ So we’re excited about that.”
Check out the synopsis below for the midseason premiere of SHIELD titled “Broken Promises”.
“Though Coulson and May are growing closer, Coulson remains unaware of the dark secret May is hiding beneath the surface. Meanwhile, Aida is unrelenting in her search for the Darkhold.”
Agents of SHIELD returns on January 10 at 10pm EST on ABC.
