4YE’s Year In Review 2016: How Marvel Won Big On Both The Big Screen And Television

It’s safe to say that 2016 was an interesting year. We spent most of it scratching our collective heads as the craziest things kept happening (Trump winning the US presidency, Brexit, all those celebrity deaths).

There is one thing that did happen that wasn’t so crazy nor expected but incredibly awesome nonetheless and that is how epic Marvel was in everything it touched in 2016.

Marvel had one of its biggest years ever as it had something new for us to enjoy pretty much every other month. From Daredevil to Doctor Strange, Marvel definitely delivered in entertaining us by bringing to life some of our favorite characters from the comics.

And with that, let’s reminisce about all the Marvel fun we had in 2016.

Film

Marvel kicked off its cinematic dominance  by dropping on us one of its most intense films, Captain America: Civil War. Since it was announced in 2014, the hype surrounding this movie was at all time high. The trailer for it nearly broke us, and it is also safe to say the movie did the same as Marvelites everywhere were asked to choose a side as Iron Man and Captain America fought against one another.  No matter what side you chose, everyone came out a winner with this movie.

Marvel ended its big screen fun for 2016 by delivering what is easily its most eccentric yet fun film so far, Doctor Strange. With its talent cast led by Emmy winner Benedict Cumberbatch, Doctor Strange took audiences to places they never thought they would go to. As far as origin stories go, ever since Stephen Strange was name dropped in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, we have been dying to see his come to live, and Marvel did not let us down.

While not a Marvel Studios film, Deadpool makes it on the list as it gave us the Merch With A Mouth, a character played with absolute perfection by Ryan Reynolds. Deadpool was redeemed with this movie as it gave us all the R-rated fun that should be associated with the character and more.

Marvel is slated to have an even bigger year in 2017 with Logan, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2, Spider-Man: Homecoming, and Thor: Ragnarok, so we might be reviewing its fun once more towards the end of 2017!

Television

Daredevil started off Marvel’s television dominance back in March, which nearly broke Netflix, as fans were glued to their screens, desperately trying to watch all of the episodes. Season two of the hit drama gave us one of the most morally grey characters in The Punisher, who is actually getting his own series now, thanks to his incredible appearance as Matt Murdock’s rival. We also got to see Elektra, who definitely held her own as she broke down some of Matt’s walls and delivered her own epic ass kicking scenes. Daredevil is slated to return in 2018 for its third season.

It was a Sweet Christmas indeed, in September that is, when the highly anticipated Luke Cage premiered on Netflix. This show definitely broke Netflix records and the site itself (Netflix went down the day it premiered) as viewers binged on Mike Colter’s take on a Marvel favorite. Luke Cage was definitely needed in a year where the Black Lives Matter movement had reached an all time high as Americans everywhere were trying to make sense of all the senseless violence towards minorities. The show has been renewed for a second season, which will probably drop in 2018.

Fret not, 2017 will be one of the biggest years for Marvel TV as its bringing us Iron Fist, The Defenders, which will gives Daredevil and Luke Cage again, and Jessica Jones‘s second season.

Here’s to Marvel and may 2017 be just as amazing!
