We’ve heard lots of rumors about when Sherlock would return with its fourth season.
For most of the time, we just assumed the BBC hit show would return in early January. This would be following in the footsteps of the previous seasons. We finally have a confirmed day. It’s so incredibly close that Sherlockians can’t even believe their luck.
The official Sherlock page on Facebook and Twitter announced the news themselves with a picture of a violin against a familiar backdrop. We’ve earlier seen John and Sherlock pose in front of it. The date for when Sherlock is going to return just very simply stands on the right: 1.1.2017

Though, this is not only the date the fourth series will premiere in the UK. It will also air on the same date in the US on PBS.
At this point, we’ve already watched the trailer multiple times to find out what is going to happen to our favorite sleuth duo.
There’s still not a lot we do know about the upcoming season. The trailer doesn’t reveal much of the storyline. We do know that we get a new villain, who is going to be played by Toby Jones. This new season just seems so much darker. The fact that on the picture they’ve chosen to announce the news: a violin where just one string is broken. It might also foreshadow what could happen. After all, Sherlock’s demons “have been waiting for a very long time.”
The other thing we know so far is that the first two episodes will be called “The Six Thatchers” and “The Lying Detective”. Now we also know the name of Toby Jones’ character, which is Culverton Smith. From this name, w know from which Arthur Conan Doyle Story he originates: “The Adventure of the Dying Detective”.
Doesn’t that sound a lot like the title of the second episode? It definitely makes you wonder if it is that episode Toby Jones will make his first on screen appearance on Sherlock or if he’ll also be around in the first episode. TWe also need to figure out whether or not Moriarty is back. Two villains in one episode? It seems a bit too much.
To be honest, you never know with Sherlock.
Let’s all watch the teaser trailer once more to get us in the proper Sherlock mood.
