Monsters Unleashed: Marvel’s Mysterious Project Finally Revealed

Marvel, kings of the art of teasing, have been playing with our minds with a project called “MU”. And because it’s Marvel we could expect pretty much anything from a mysterious, long-teased project.

Yesterday, at the Diamond Retailer Summit in Baltimore, Marvel Comics finally revealed what “MU” is all about.

It’s, in my opinion, the coolest thing ever.

The title is Monsters Unleashed, and it presumably will feature classic monsters like Dracula, Frankenstein’s creature, the Werewolf, and Marvel creatures like Man-Thing, who had its place in the original Monsters Unleashed back in the ‘70s.

This series will feature art by Steve McNiven, Leinil Yu, Adam Kubert, Greg Land, and Salvador Larroca, with writer Cullen Bunn also on board. There are no details on which monsters will make it to the comics, but let’s go back in time and revisit the original Monsters Unleashed.

This black and white magazine ran from 1973 to 1975 and focused on Marvel’s own monsters: Man-Thing, Werewolf by Night, and Frankenstein’s monster. Normally, each issue featured a Man-Thing story, some original tales, pre-Comics Code horror reprints. Sometimes an article about monster movies and television shows.

Monsters Unleashed lasted eleven issues. If only I could find one of those babies somewhere…

What’s not to love about a horror magazine with a Frankenstein’s creature on the upper left corner, reading a book titled “Marvel Monster Group”?

You know, some of us like living in a permanent Halloween.

The news come from attendees of the summit, as retailers are the only ones who can be there, so there’s no official press release Marvel has a variety of monsters they can use in this new MU run, but it would also be incredible if they bring back those classic monsters. You know, nostalgia. And who doesn’t love Frankenstein’s monster?! (My favourite!)

Monsters Unleashed is coming to our lives in January of next year. The wait will be worth it, I’m sure!
