Criminal Minds will be back in one week.

While the season has been surrounded by a lot of off-set drama, we can look forward to some exciting returns. While everyone knows that Paget Brewster, who plays Emily Prentiss, has returned to the main cast; a favorite guest actor has returned as well.

Before her days of stalking the halls of McKinley High and tormenting glee clubs, Jane Lynch was a fan favorite on Criminal Minds. Her recurring guest role was that of Dr. Diana Reid aka Dr. Spencer Reid’s (Matthew Gray Gubler) mother.

In the show, Diana lives in a Las Vegas long term care facility due to her schizophrenia. Before this, she was a university literature professor that, I believe, specialized in medieval literature. It was revealed in last season’s “Entropy” that Diana was displaying early signs of dementia.

TVGuide.com has reported that Lynch will be making her return as Diana for a season 12 arc. The last time that fans have seen the character on screen was around season four (aka pre-Glee). So this marks about a seven-year period of not seeing the character physically on screen.

It will probably be heartbreaking to see her return. I always tend to cry at the scenes involving Spencer and his mother.

The pair of episodes will air in early 2017 as part of a very “heavy Reid story”, according to producer Erica Messer.

Lynch is best known for her roles in Glee and Wreck It Ralph. She is also the host of Hollywood Game Night. It will be great to see her return in the role that introduced me to this amazingly talented actress.

Criminal Minds returns September 28th at 9/8c on CBS.
