Games of Thrones star Richard Madden has landed a new gig. Madden, aka Robb Stark, aka The King in the North, will lead Amazon’s ambitious sci-fi pilot Strange New Things.
Although the title may sound eerily similar to Netflix’s hit Stranger Things, starring Winona Ryder, the new Amazon project is in fact based on a 2014 novel by Dutch-born writer Michel Faber. The full title of the novel is The Book of Strange New Things.
According to TVLine, the Strange New Things adaptation is being planned as a ten episode event series.
Madden will play Peter Leigh, an English pastor who has been sent to guide the population of a faraway colonial planet. Spreading the word on the world of Oasis, Peter struggles with separation from his wife Bea.
The book was highly praised on its release, with The Guardian calling it “astonishing and deeply affecting.”
Could the TV adaptation be as big a hit as the similarly-named Netflix show?
When Deadline originally broke the adaptation news back in April, they said that it was “gearing up to be one of the most ambitious TV projects ever to emanate from the UK.”
British screenwriter Matt Charman – Oscar nominated for Best Original Screenplay for 2015’s Bridge of Spies – is penning the drama. Kevin Macdonald (The Last King of Scotland) will direct.
Madden is still best known for his work on the first three seasons of Thrones, before his abrupt and shocking Red Wedding departure.
Since then, more attention has fallen on former cast mate Kit Harington for his portrayal of Jon Snow. Although Madden initially seemed the stronger presence, Harington has really come into his own. As the HBO series continues to wind down, it will be interesting to see how the young cast fare in their post-Thrones careers.
