All week fans have been preparing themselves for the release of Suicide Squad, but critics haven’t taken too kindly to DC’s villain flick! To prove my point, the current RottenTomatoes score is an uncomfortable 35%!

Similar to the previous installment of the DCEU, Batman v. Superman, the critics’ reviews prior to Suicide Squad’s release are not promising. It is inevitable that comparisons are going to be drawn between Suicide Squad and Guardian’s of the Galaxy. Marvel proved a quirky ensemble film with mostly unknown characters can be a hit… but critics are showing that the Squad may not have the same success.

The one thing to bear in mind is that these critics aren’t necessarily fans of the genre, or familiar with the universe and the characters. Batman v. Superman may not have objectively been the best film, but plenty of fans were pleased with the characterisation of their favourites. Therefore, many fans are optimistic about the future of the Justice League.

Director David Ayer (Fury) responded to the negativity surrounding Suicide Squad on twitter with a quote from, the 19th century Mexican revolutionary, Emiliano Zapata:

“Prefiero morir de pie que vivir de rodillas,” roughly translates to, “I’d prefer to die on my feet than to live on my knees.” To clarify, Ayer tweeted again:

This assurance, alongside the enthusiasm of the cast on the press tour, is certainly a comfort to this fan! Hopefully this means that the critics just didn’t get it. After all, comic book fans are a niche audience, and if Ayer made his film catering to us rather than the critics, it should be a blast!

What do you think? Are you still going to see Suicide Squad this week or have the critics put you off?

Suicide Squad blasts into cinemas August 5th!
