This week – just like any other week – fans around the world celebrated that magic that is the 2001 hit The Princess Diaries. This very particular week was a special one, as the movie celebrate its 15th anniversary. Perhaps the film’s biggest fan, though, had the most to celebrate: a very successful career thanks to the movie.
Anne Hathaway, movie star and underappreciated physical comedy genius, celebrated the bittersweet (more on that later) in a very touching and heartfelt Instagram and Facebook post. She recognized the importance of the humor of the movie by including one of its funniest moments: “SHUT UP!”
The post went on to appreciate the fans and the following the movie has to this day. She mentioned most of the gang we all know and love: “Mia, Louie, Lily, Joe, Michael and, of course, Queen Clarisse.” Ya nailed it, Hathaway, minus one tiny thing… I know the sentiment was meant to be short and sweet, but one of the most important acknowledgments missing from this post is in appreciation of Anne Hathaway herself. Despite the self-proclaimed Hatha-haters out there, I find Hathaway to be extremely gracious and genuine. But she deserves some recognition, too! Acting alongside Julie Andrews in a major feature film – and your first film gig – is a pretty big deal. Knocking it out of the ball park, which we all know she did, would be nearly impossible for most. Hathaway led the cast with her adorable, quirky charm and gave us odd ducks someone to look up to. So, I would like to take this moment to formally appreciate Anne Hathaway and the way she perfectly embodied Amelia Mignonette Thermopolis Renaldi, Princess of Genovia.
Hathaway (and I) would be remiss if we spoke of The Princess Diaries without a shout out to its director, the late Garry Marshall. The legendary director and human being passed away in late July, but his legacy will never be forgotten thanks to this film and countless others.
“And to Garry Marshall,” Hathaway wrote, “Thank you for making me a princess. I love you always my beloved friend and teacher, and I miss you every day.” I told you it was bittersweet… View the entire post below.

It's been 15 years (say it with me) SHUT UP!!!!! To all the fans who have loved Mia, Louie, Lily, Joe, Michael and, of course, Queen Clarisse, thank you from the bottom of my heart! And to Garry Marshall, thank you for making me a princess. I love you always my beloved friend and teacher, and I miss you every day xx
So, friends, let us all celebrate this fantastically wonderful film, its cast, and its director, by quoting our favorite lines. Ready, go!
“Goodbye, trolley people!”
