Star Trek Beyond is approaching at warp speed, and JJ Abrams isn’t being shy about revealing info about the future of the franchise. Well, firstly, there’s definitely going to be a fourth film, so you can all relax!

On top of that, he revealed his plans to include Chris Hemsworth as Kirk’s father in the fourth instalment, saying they’re currently writing a script where the Kirk men get to go on an adventure together. But that’s the only double-Kirk we’re likely to get.

Abrams has finally slammed rumours that William Shatner might appear in future films. Of course, the late Leonard Nimoy played a role in earlier movies in the franchise, but Abrams says it’s not likely that Shatner will do the same. “Obviously it’s Star Trek, nearly anything is possible,” he told the Toronto Sun.

“There’s the fairly simple notion that on the day Kirk was born another timeline began. But in the other timeline, Kirk died onscreen [in Generations]. I don’t know how he would come back unless we went into this other reality and we did a timeline and reality jump.” So there is a way…

“In all the years we’ve been working on this,” Abrams said, “I’ve yet to hear a pitch that didn’t sound too contorted and contrived for an audience to swallow.” Like the time travelling black hole thing was easy to swallow…

In more sober news, Abrams has also declared that they will not be recasting the role of Pavel Chekov, played by the late Anton Yelchin, who tragically passed away in an accident last month. I would say there’s no replacing him,” Abrams said. ”There’s no re-casting. I can’t possibly imagine that, and I think Anton deserves better.”

He confirmed that he’s working on ideas about how exactly to retire the character, but says “it’s too early to talk about it” just yet.

You can see Yelchin’s last performance in Star Trek Beyond, in cinemas everywhere on July 22.
