As a Potterhead, I can’t wait to read the screenplay for Harry Potter and the Cursed Child so that I can finally return to the wizarding world and get to see how my favourite characters are doing 19 years later. And from what I have read, the reactions from people who have seen the play have been very impressed by the production. One person, in particular, thought some parts of the play were better than the films, and that was none other the original Hermione Granger herself, Emma Watson.
The actress posted about her experience earlier this week, praising the cast and crew, including the performance of Noma Dumezweni as Hermione. Watson said on her Facebook page, “Yesterday I went to see the Cursed Child. I came in with no idea what to expect and it was AMAZING. Some things about the play were, I think, possibly even more beautiful than the films. Having seen it I felt more connected to Hermione and the stories than I have since Deathly Hallows came out, which was such a gift. Meeting Noma and seeing her on stage was like meeting my older self and have her tell me everything was going to be alright, which as you can imagine was immensely comforting (and emotional)! The cast and crew welcomed me like I was family and Noma was everything I could ever hope she would be. She’s wonderful. The music is beautiful… I could go on… Here are some pics of me meeting Noma and the crew.”
It must have been slightly weird for Watson to watch someone else play Hermione on the stage, but she seems to be very impressed by the production which is very reassuring to hear. And it also begs the question of who else of the Potter cast will attend the play in order to see how their beloved characters have changed.
All of this makes me even more excited to get my hands on the screenplay… July 31st can’t come soon enough for me!
