As we get closer to San Diego Comic Con, we get even more tidbits that have us pumped for Starz’s American Gods and its highly anticipated presence at the convention. Yesterday we got our first look at the series’ broody iteration of Technical Boy, one of the so-called New Gods. Technical Boy, played by Bruce Langley, is a fairly powerful god, given that he feeds off the world’s addiction to the internet.
If the character looks unrecognizable to you, that’s not by mistake. When Neil Gaiman’s novel American Gods came out, it was the very beginning of the new millennium and, needless to say, technology has changed a bit since then. And according to producer Michael Green, so has the character.
“Technology has gone from something that was the province of the young to something ubiquitous and in your pocket, and the aesthetics of that have changed… Technology very much has a tie into fashion, which goes in cycles and changes overnight. What’s in fashion, technologically, and what’s in fashion, in fashion, are minute to minute and you can’t possibly keep up. And we look to the Technical Boy to be someone who’s very much a victim of both. The idea of feeling like you have to feed the beast of what’s new and what’s fresh is very much in his mind.”
Not only did we get this look at Technical Boy, but we now have a decent idea of what another character will look like onscreen. Comedian Dane Cooke has been cast in the series as Robbie, the best friend of the main character, Shadow Moon (Ricky Whittle). While Shadow was in prison, Robbie looked after Laura, Shadow’s wife, and when Shadow gets out of prison, Robbie makes sure he still has his job at the gym. The series will follow Shadow after he is released from prison, as he’s drawn into a war between the Old Gods and the New Gods.
American Gods will debut on Starz next year. Keep an eye on 4YE as we head to San Diego Comic Con for all of our American Gods coverage!
