In an announcement that has me totally “Defying Gravity” right now, one of the world’s most popular musicals is set to come to the big screen.
Universal has announced that Wicked is set to light up the big screen.
Before we all get too excited, it’s actually not going to happen until 2019. That’s three years away, Toto!
Wicked, which tells the story of two Witches, Elphaba and Glinda from the merry old land of Oz, has been a HUGE hit on Broadway, the West End and every other musical circuit it has played around the globe since it premiered in November of 1998 in San Francisco.
Wicked is based on the 1995 novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West by Gregory Maguire. It charts the story of Elphaba, how she came to be green skinned and also is a curt political, social, and ethical commentary on the nature of good and evil.
It is one of the world’s most successful stage musicals, breaking records and selling out tickets faster than you can ride a broom stick. It has also made stars of original Broadway actresses Idina Menzel, who played Elphaba and Kristin Chenoweth as Glinda. The ladies have notched up numerous awards with Menzel winning a Best Actress Tony in 2004.
There has been talk about bringing Wicked to the screen for quite some time, especially since the huge success of Les Miserables. While I am really excited to see how they adapt and convert the production for cinema, the old board treader in me hopes that it makes people go back to the theatre to see how it’s done live on stage; because the productions I have seen have been nothing short of spine tingling in their execution.
As of right now, no casting news has been announced, but we will keep you posted as soon as it comes to hand.
