The cast of Hairspray Live! is quickly turning into a who’s who of the Broadway community and more.
So far, NBC has announced Oscar winner Jennifer Hudson and Tony winner Harvey Fierstein are heading to the 60s for Hairspray Live! as Motormouth Maybelle and Edna Turnblad respectively. That casting news was followed by Martin Short and Dancing With The Stars‘ Derek Hough joining the fun.
The musical has even found its Tracy Turnblad in newcomer Maddie Baillio. So who’s still missing? The villain, of course!
Not to worry though as Hairspray Live has founds its villain. Tony and Emmy Winner Kristin Chenoweth will take on the role of Velma Von Tussle in the upcoming musical. NBC made the announcement of Chenoweth’s casting on Tuesday.
“We are so excited and fortunate that Kristin — one of the best musical performers in the world — wants to come and play with us on Hairspray,” Robert Greenblatt, chairman of NBC Entertainment, said of Chenoweth’s casting .
“Everything she does is incredible, going back to the iconic Glinda in Wicked, and there’s no one better to play Velma Von Tussle. Each year we find that more and more of the top talent in our business wants to experience the once-in-a-lifetime thrill of these live musicals, and the bigger the roster of stars, the better the event. This one is shaping up to be one of our best!”
Chenoweth as Velma Von Tussle is casting at its finest as Velma is a little bit of Glinda and Olive from Pushing Daisies combined, and Chenoweth dominated in those two roles.
Hairspray Live! will be the fourth live musical from NBC. It will follow The Wiz Live, 2013’s A Sound of Music Live, and the notorious bomb that was 2014’s Peter Pan Live. Back to produce will be Craig Zadan and Neil Meron.

Hairspray Live! will air on Dec. 7 at 8 p.m. ET on NBC.
