Musical fans rejoice!

After the phenomenal success of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s hit Broadway show Hamilton, The Weinstein Company has finally started development on a movie version of Miranda’s first Broadway musical In The Heights, reports Variety.

In The Heights tells the story of Washington Heights and its inhabitants, with lead role Usnavi, a bodega owner with a dream of going home to the Dominican Republic, originally played by Miranda himself. This was in addition to him writing the music and lyrics for the whole show.

The musical deals with the struggles faced by immigrant communities, with a core message of the importance of community itself, and of hope.

Miranda was nominated for the Tony Award for Best Actor in a Musical for In The Heights, amongst 12 other nominations for the show. This year Hamilton has been nominated for a record of 16 nominations. The results to be announced on June 12th.

This  movie has been a long time coming – back in 2011 it was put into turnaround by Universal, but now finally we’re getting what we’ve been waiting for.

“As a kid from Queens, I’ve always loved bringing New York stories to film,” said TWC’s Harvey Weinstein. “‘In the Heights and Lin-Manuel brought Washington Heights to Broadway back in 2008 and in the process turned the theatre world on its head.  The movie musicals of the 1950s were incredible, but ‘In The Heights’ will revolutionise what movie audiences expect from the genre.“

Have no fear! The movie is sure to be as close to the stage production as possible: Miranda is a producer, alongside Scott Sanders and Mara Jacobs, and the script is written by Quiara Alegria Hudes, aka the author of the book for the original stage show.

Those of you who just can’t get enough of Miranda’s talent, Disney has also announced a Mary Poppins sequel, starring Miranda as a streetlamp-lighter opposite Emily Blunt’s Poppins.

Mary Poppins Returns is due to hit cinemas December 25, 2018. Hamilton is on Broadway now. In The Heights is playing in the West End.
