Despite the less than favorable turn for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Syfy still wants in on the DC business.

The network has ordered the Superman prequel Krypton to pilot.

Set two generations before the destruction of Krypton, we follow Superman’s paternal grandfather as he tries to restore honor to the House of El and save his world from chaos.

Why is he trying to restore honor? The House of El has been shamed and ostracized for reasons.

Admittedly, this is a pretty interesting turn for a DC project. The destruction of Krypton is as well known to general public as the robbery/homicide of Bruce Wayne’s parents. FOX has enjoyed success with its own prequel series, Gotham.

The planet Krypton and the traditions of its people, the Kryptonians, are a huge question mark to most fans. Mainly because most Kryptonians are such huge jerks when not related to Superman in some fashion. This could be a very interesting project. It could allow some rounding out and exploration of this culture that the beloved hero comes from.

It’s interesting if explored correctly.

So will it be?

Personally, I’m not a huge fan of David S. Goyer, who will co-write the pilot and executive produce the show. He’s written the first two movies in the DC Extended Universe: Man of Steel and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. I’ve just never been a fan.

I, however, love Superman. I’m going to give the show a fair shot. I would love to see a further exploration of Krypton.

The rest of the creative team will include Damian Kindler (Sleepy Hollow) as showrunner if picked up to series and Colin McCarthy to direct the pilot. Goyer will write the pilot episode with Once Upon A Time‘s Ian Goldberg.

Krypton will premiere during the 2016-17 TV season.
