Christmas 2018 will be given us something quite musical to be happy about.
After much speculation, Disney has finally decided to put all rumors to rest whe it comes to the Mary Poppins sequel. It has been teased for months now that there is going to be a sequel to the 1964 Disney Classic starring Dame Julie Andrews.
What Disney Pictures addressed the sequel and the details surrounding it head on this Tuesday. The company officially confirmed that Emily Blunt and Lin-Manuel Miranda will be starring in Mary Poppins Returns. The company also announced when the sequel will be hitting theatres; the sequel is currently slated for a December 25, 2018 premiere date.
Blunt will be Mary Poppins naturally, everyone’s favorite nanny. As for Miranda, he’s going to be playing a new character. His character is a street lamplighter named Jack, who is an ally to Mary.
Both the actors have been circling in talks for roles in the sequel for quite sometime. So far, no other roles have been cast. Given Blunt’s critically acclaimed role in Into the Woods and Miranda’s current record breaking turn on Broadway in Hamilton, the sequel is off to good start so far.
Mary Poppins Returns will be directed by Chicago‘s Rob Marshall and will feature new songs by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman.
The sequel, as far as the plot goes, will be taking place in London during the Depression. It will follow Mary Poppins and Jack as they come to the aid of now grown up Jane and Michael Banks to help them rediscover the joy in their lives.
Sounds like a winner so far!
