Ever since the news that the Tony winning musical Hedwig and The Angry Inch would be embarking on a US National Tour, the question on everyone’s lips has been who will play everyone’s favourite East German genderqueer rock star. Many fans had hoped that Glee star Darren Criss would reprise the role which he played to great acclaim last year at New York’s Belasco Theatre.
Earlier today these fans prayers were answered as it was announced that Criss will open the US National Tour in his home town of San Francisco, and then moving on to Los Angeles. The tour will open at SNH Golden Gate Theatre on October 4 and run until October 30. The show will run at Pantages Theatre from November 1 until November 27. Criss will no doubt be very excited to play a role which meant so much to him in his home town, and in one of the cities he has made his second home. It shows in what high regard Criss is held by creator and original Hedwig John Cameron Mitchell, lyricist Stephen Trask, and director Michael Mayer that the youngest stage Hedwig is reprising the role.
Criss is not the only returning cast from the Broadway revival. It was also confirmed that Hedwig’s house band “The Angry Inch” aka Tits of Clay would also be returning for the US National Tour. Justin Craig, Matt Duncan, Peter Yanowitz, and Tim Mislock were the house band for the entire Broadway run. We have yet to discover who will be playing Hedwig’s husband Yitzhak however I am hoping that either Rebecca Naomi Jones will return, or it would be fantastic if Shannon Conley (who served as understudy Yitzhak on Broadway) was given a chance to truly shine.
There is no word as to who will wear the wig as the tour continues across the remainder of the US tour. Tickets for San Francisco and Los Angeles are on sale now. For those who are planning a trip to LA, Pantages Theatre are advising that Criss will not be performing on the following dates: November 6th at 6:30pm, November 13th at 6:30pm, November 20th at 6:30pm and November 25th at 8:00pm.
