Alicia Vikander Is Our New Lara Croft

Lara Croft is a name synonymous with a posh English accent, overt sexuality, and adventure. It has been for decades. Angelina Jolie portrayed the explorer in the early 2000s in films that had horrible reviews and though made a decent profit. At the time, Jolie nailed the aesthetic; large breasts, steamy make out scenes and things that pandered to the young male audience, just like the games have all these years.

But with a new era comes a new Tomb Raider and the upcoming movie, to be directed by Roar Uthaug (The Wave), will be more along the lines of female empowerment than sexualization. This, by the way, is a huge step forward for video games and films alike and it’s awesome! Not to mention, Lara will be portrayed by none other than Academy Award winner Alicia Vikander.

Vikander has had an amazing twelve months with staring roles in Ex Machina, Burnt, The Man From U.N.C.L.E and, of course, The Danish Girl, which is what she won the Oscar for. There’s no doubt in my mind that she is perfect for the role. At first, I thought they couldn’t get any better than Daisy Ridley (who was previously eyeing the role) but, I stand mistaken.

The new film will explore a young and “untested” Lara on one of her first adventures. It’s seemingly drawing inspiration from 2013’s Tomb Raider game and the follow up Rise of the Tomb Raider. However, there is always a possibility for a different direction this early in development.

MGM and Warner Bros. are co-producing, with MGM overseeing production. They acquired the rights from GK Films, which had previously purchased the film rights from Square Enix. Graham King is serving as producer.

The movie currently has no release date or title but anticipation is high, at least for me. I grew up with Jolie’s Lara and I am excited for a new direction and a new actress. I’m sure Vikander is too. This gives her her own franchise which is terrific for her because she is so immensely talented. I can’t wait to see what she does.
