X-Men: Apocalypse is definitely set to further shake-up the universe of the X-Men films.
Outside of some amazing action, great actors, further character development, and maybe even Wolverine, the one thing that Apocalypse is embracing is the 80s.
The 1980s were certainly a wild time for everyone. Just look at the neon, the hair, the hairspray, and the music. Much like how First Class and Days of Future Past embraced their time periods, we’re going to see more of it in Apocalypse.
Frankly, I’m excited. Perhaps I’ve watched the VH1’s I Love the 80s one too many times.
In a photo shared today by Sophie Turner, who plays Jean Grey, we see a lovely multilayer shout out going on.
She wrote: “#FBF that time Cyclops and I went shopping at the mall and found our favorite singer’s album (pre 1989, of course).”
The first, most obvious, shout-out is to the character of Dazzler. In comics, Dazzler is a mutant with the abilities to change sound into light at various intensities: from harmless to harmful. Essentially, given the time she was created, she was kind of like a human disco ball.
In comics, Dazzler has a successful singing career.
The cover of the album itself is a reference to a cover from a Dazzler comic by Bill Sienkiewicz made in 1983.
The final reference, “pre-1989, of course”, has most people thinking of a more recent, and real, pop star: Taylor Swift.
The cast went to go see the singer in her 1989 World Tour event. Also, Simon Kinberg, producer and writer for the film, is apparently a fan of Swift.
Rumors that Swift would appear as Dazzler have been put to the side. This photo, however, is reigniting them.
I, for one, would love to see Dazzler make a live action appearance in the X-Men films.
X-Men: Apocalypse comes out May 27th.
