It looks like all those rumors about who exactly Grant Ward (played by Brett Dalton) is going to be on the upcoming midseason of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. have finally been laid to rest. Fans of the show were in for quite the surprise during the midseason finale when Ward was supposedly killed off by Phil Coulson while the two were fighting on the Inhuman planet.
Ward took a bullet from Coulson all but dead when both Coulson and Fitz left. The shock came later when Ward made his way back down to Earth but look possessed by the entity only known as Death at the point.
The showrunners of S.H.I.E.L.D., Jed Whedon and Maurissa Tanchareon, have since spoken out about who exactly Ward is and have confirmed that he is Hive. Dalton’s co-star, Elizabeth Henstridge earlier this year referred to Ward as Hive during a convention, which put the fandom into a frenzy.
Whedon and Tanchareon confirmed Ward’s identity this week.
“As we saw in the midseason finale episode, Ward is back on Earth, but he’s definitely not the same Ward who went through the portal to the alien world,” Tancharoen and Whedon said.
The showrunners said Ward’s version of The Hive “is going to have its own unique twist and be very different from what fans have seen so far. We will see similarities that pay homage to the original character, but fans will see that Hive is taking an exciting new direction in the world of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.”
For those needing a refresher on who exactly The Hive is, the villain was, in the comics, created in the Hydra laboratories. It was an experiment made to physically embody the Hydra ideal. The entity is composed of untold numbers of genetically-engineered parasites.
Grotesque and menacing in both stature and appearance the Hive had no identity of its own, per se, as its collective will dominates the human host it engulfs, which fans of the show have already gotten a glimpse on the show.
Find out what The Hive will be up to when Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. returns on March 8th.
