Arrow left viewers with quite the cliffhanger in the December when Felicity Smoak was gunned down in a limousine, not too long after saying yes to Oliver’s proposal. When Arrow returns for the second part of its fourth season, the question on everyone’s mind is whether Oliver will go dark to get revenge on one Damien Darhk.
To be fair, if he does, it would not be the first time the vigilante has turned to the dark side to fight a Big Bad (remember his small tenure as the new Ra’s?). The bigger question though is if he does, will he be able to make it back to the light side, given that his beloved is out of the picture for now and fighting for her life.
Arrow‘s executive producer Wendy Mericle offered up some insight as to where this latter half of the season is going and how much a certain frenemy of Oliver’s will shape it.
“I think we’re really excited to see the final confrontation between Oliver and Damien Darhk. I mean, this is the first season we’ve launched a Big Bad in the premiere and tracked him all the way through. When we left at the end of 2015, he’d obviously done something really horrifying. One of the things we’ve been most excited about is exploring how Oliver’s going to react — What is he going to do, and will he go back on who he’s become, and become darker? Will he go back to more of a Season 1 type Oliver, who’s willing to kill, to go to those dark places to get revenge?,” shared Mericle.
As for that aforementioned frenemy, Mericle wants fans to think of that individual as rather the devil on Oliver’s shoulder (think cartoon characters with a little angel and devil talking to them).
“Felicity was always the angel on his shoulder — and whether she is or is not going forward I will leave everyone to find out when Episode 410 airs. The one person that might be helpful to him is Malcolm. What the viewers will see is we’re going to have him give Oliver some very interesting and helpful advice. And obviously we’re going to blow that up. It will bring them a bit closer together, though, which will give us some really juicy stuff when we start to break them back apart,” Mericle teases.
Malcolm Merlyn guiding Oliver Queen? If that doesn’t spell trouble, what else does? On the other hand, as previously discussed, Merlyn does have his reasons to want to help Oliver, given that Darhk try to kill Thea so this may be the start of a very interesting relationship/partnership.
Viewers will find out what Felicity’s fate and how Oliver will react soon as Arrow returns to our screens on Wednesday, January 20th at 8pm ET on the CW.
